Uncomfortable Unknown

Pain is often a nebulous experience for most, it arises seemingly without provocation and creates a sense of panic in even the most level-headed of people.
The fear that ensues when a painful sensation arises is akin to the times when you stood in your room as a kid with the lights off. The unknown space in front of you plays tricks on you. The inevitable stories that you begin to create start to seem possible, if not factual. Who knows what monsters lie in wait.
We often want to know exactly what it is that has created the unrest. We elect to undergo some sort of test. An X-ray, an MRI, a CT scan. The tests are an attempt at shedding light in the dark, and unknown space we currently occupy. That flash of light reveals a shadow that appears ominous and potentially dangerous. The fear and panic rise, the cycle continues.
As time passes we undergo interventions, some helpful some not. Our bodies are adapting and learning, improving to their best ability. Eventually the pain subsides. Repeat testing reveals the ominous shadow was the teddy bear you left in the middle of the floor, the unrest was the darkness itself.
